Part of the fun of writing the books is visiting the locations. It helps with authenticity, stimulates ideas, and, in fairness, is a great excuse for a weekend away. But with readers all over the world, I thought it would useful to gather together a page of location pictures so you can see exactly what they look like.

Rochester Square, Camden, England
Featured in: Cold Press, Out Of The Red, Fade To Silence, Court Me Kill Me
This is where Anna and Danny live, so it seems the best place to start…
Warsaw, Poland
Featured in: Illusions Of Warsaw
The capital of Poland, Warsaw, has had a tough time over the years. The Old Town was destroyed by the Nazis, but was rebuilt in the 1950s. The giant Palace of Culture and Science was a gift from Stalin and dominates the skyline. You can see it on the cover of the book… The original source picture for the cover is below. You can see the slightly scary security grilles in some of the flats too… All of the pictures were taken during the book research trip in October 2019.
Camden, England
Featured in: Cold Press, Out Of The Red, Fade To Silence, Court Me Kill Me
Camden is often mentioned. The World’s End Pub features in pivotal scenes in Cold Press and Out Of The Red .
Baynes Street Canal, Camden
Featured in: Cold Press, Fade To Silence
Danny has important meetings under this bridge… although occasionally the stairs have proven dangerous 🙂
Cologne, Germany
Featured in: Cold Press, Out Of The Red
Cold Press ends in the bar of the Hotel Excelsior Ernst in Cologne, which is in the shadow of the Dom – the big cathedral. Out Of The Red starts in a hotel on the other side of the river.
Hotel Marinela, Sofia, Bulgaria
Featured in: Out Of The Red, Fade To Silence
The Vitosha New Otani in Sofia is now called Hotel Marinela. Pivotal scenes in Out Of The Red and Fade To Silence are set in the bar, although no spoilers, haha. No guns are allowed. Just as well.
Sofia, Bulgaria
Featured in: Out Of The Red, Fade To Silence
Anna and Danny stay in a hotel opposite a disused nightclub in Sofia. I crashed the drone. Ooops. It was very cold but the sun came out on day two.
Staverton, Devon, England
Featured in: Fade To Silence
Anna and Danny stay at the Sea Trout Inn in Staverton, and then go for a walk to the river and see a steam train. It pretty much goes wrong thereafter.
Bratislava, Slovakia
Featured in: Court Me Kill Me
There’s a memorable day trip to Bratislava in Court Me Kill Me. Lunch overlooking the pedestrianised city centre doesn’t end well.
Farringdon, London, England
Featured in: Out Of The Red, Fade To Silence
Farringdon is in central London, close to Kings Cross. It gets a brief cameo in Out Of The Red but becomes much more prominent in Fade To Silence
Cold Press – miscellaneous
Featured in: Cold Press
The student house, Clare’s flat, and Bentley’s night club are all in Sunderland – while the beach at Seaham is just outside. The Otter Tavern is based on the Lazy Otter near Stretham in Cambridgeshire, while Fleet Street was the home of the British newspaper industry until everyone moved out.
Out Of The Red – miscellaneous
Featured in: Out Of The Red
Anna meets Mitch at Bromley-By-Bow Underground station. She’d just been taking pictures at a derelict building, while he’d been at the Three Mills film studios. There’s all sorts of seediness in Eversholt Street in Euston, while Blackfriars Bridge is a great place for quiet reflection. 😉
In The Frame – miscellaneous
Featured in: In The Frame
Anna was a student, living in a hall of residence, based on the Marylebone tower at the University of Westminster. She met Danny at the student bar in Bolsover Street. Alas it’s no longer there.
